#localjournalismday #LJD
The ‘Day of Local Journalism 2026’ is an initiative by IPPEN.MEDIA and co-initiator DRIVE, an initiative of 30 regional newspaper publishers, coordinated by dpa and Highberg/Schickler.
“We celebrate the stories that take place right on our doorstep.”
Local is not small.
Local is close, relevant and indispensable. On May 5, 2026, we celebrate the Day of Local Journalism — a day for neighbours, community groups, small businesses, big hearts, and all the people who keep our towns and cities alive.
Why this day matters?
Because strong local journalism builds trust, brings clarity, and strengthens the fabric of our communities. It tells us what the new development plan means, who’s behind the volunteer award, and why the bus isn’t running — and it stands its ground when the hard questions need to be asked.
In short, local journalism is a cornerstone of everyday democracy. A day dedicated to it sends a clear message of appreciation — for quality, community, and the future we share.
Why local journalism deserves its own moment of recognition:
Local Democracy:
Democracy isn’t decided only in parliaments — it’s lived every day in towns, schools, associations, and city councils. Local journalism makes these processes visible, holds power to account, and enables participation.
Facts, Not Rumours
Reliable, verified information is the best antidote to disinformation. Local newsrooms provide context, debunk myths, and bring clarity — especially where false information can spread fastest.
Trust and participation
People trust information when they know who it comes from. Local reporting fosters dialogue, lowers barriers to involvement, and gives a voice to those who are often unheard.
Resilient Communities
Strong local journalism helps communities cope in times of crisis — whether during storms, pandemics, or energy shortages. It connects institutions, volunteers, and citizens through practical, verified information.
Transparency That Makes a Difference
Local journalism delivers verifiable facts, encourages dialogue, and ensures transparency and accountability among local decision‑makers.
Stand up for local journalism.
